Can’t find our wolves?

Mexican wolf at the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens

If you have been to the Zoo recently and have visited our Mexican wolf exhibit, you will experience something very unusual for our Zoo. Our Mexican wolves have gone underground. Our wolf pack is beating the heat by staying most of the day underground in a new burrow they have dug.  We can still monitor them and check on how everyone is doing, but this pack is acting almost like a wild pack in avoiding people. That was not the case before our female had a litter of pups in April. Temperatures in El Paso were above 100 degrees F when they first went underground during the later half of June. It is also possible that the reason for the change in behavior has something to do with the pup they are caring for in wanting to avoid people as much as possible.

We are all looking forward to the day when the entire pack starts coming out again during the day. In the meantime to learn more about our new wolf pack you can watch a KTSM news report here and a short video on our YouTube channel here.
